The Odyssey Formula compared to Kids Corner
When you look at the world of audio drama you can see something that I like am calling the Odyssey Formula.
The formula revolves around one person (an older wiser person) that all the kids come to when they are in trouble. That is one of the the basis for the formula. Here is the example of the formula.
- Discovery Mountain Mr. Simon
- Down Gilead Lane Grace
- Kids Corner Grandpa Anole
Stories without the formula would include:
- Starkeepers
- Red Rock Mysteries
- Brinkman Adventures
In my opinion, Kids Corner is a great audio drama that you should listen to. It is kind of like old Odyssey, following its formula even more. Here is an example:
- Liz Curt
- Lucille Lucy
- Chammy Eugene
Now with the formula in place Kids Corner creates this audio drama, and uses this formula, but because of the way Kids Corner is structured, it is very interesting and good series. In KC, the adults do not really do anything except to guide and nurture the children.
In AIO the adults can have episodes on their own, but in KC the adults exist to teach the children a lesson, or to teach the listeners a lesson. Like if KC did not have a school episodes or want to teach honor your father. You cannot teach honor your parents without having parents to honor. KC also follows six children through out the whole series. Like the original kids you meet in the first episode are Liz and Lucille. In the first season you hear from Spike, Scooter, Skink, and Morrie. In the last episode of the series Spike, Liz, Lucille, and Morrie trapped in a closet. The entire series follows the adventures of these kids, and a few more sprinkled in in later seasons. (Julia, and the New 'bully'/frenemy Cole)
Because of KC's spin on the Odyssey formula, they have created a a great series. Here is how.
The character of Spike is unique to KC. He is the non-Christian Friend of Liz's. Because of this you see example of Liz and Lucille evangelizing to him while sometimes Liz does reckless things with Spike that he would not do with Lucille.
Chammy is also a great character, she is like the child version of Eugene, and there is a large story arc of proving creationism to her and helping her to become a Christian. This spans the entire series with there being sub plots in Chammy's fait journey like her parents divorce. This creates lots of good storylines, and shows how God can be a comforter.
Because the characters are reptiles, they can have these jokes like cricket wings on sundaes and pizza, and the enemy are the snakes (who they fought in the Snake war) Apart from that if you heard KC yo would think they are Humans. Also the Snake War means you cannot calculate the years after a real war like World War 2 thus the characters are ageless.
Last but not least there is an interesting version of the Imagination Station. In a couple of episodes Liz gets knocked out and learns a spiritual truth by playing his X-Monsters game in the 'dream.' However most of the time Grandpa Anole tells tells kids what is right and sometimes the kids learn it for themselves via the consequences of their actions.
Also:
- The names of the characters are based off of reptile names like Anole and Skink
- There is this great Elementary to Middle School transition with a mini saga involving Granny Gecko
- Character weakness stay the same like Liz has pride issues and that is shown when he makes a movie or acts in a play
This is a really good series and I found it when I was looking for more audio drama because I could not only have 1 Odyssey a day.
Thanks for reading.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. The BEST News For Kids! (And Everyone Else) Have you ever tried to be good? I mean really, really good? How about trying to be perfect for a whole day? I know I have. Sometimes I think I’ve done a pretty good job. Other times I know I’ve messed up.
Sin doesn’t go away on it’s own. Somebody has to pay for it. Who could it be? God knew there was only one choice: His own Son Jesus. Jesus came to earth and did something we could never do: He obeyed perfectly. He never messed up. He never even had a bad thought. But He still took the horrible punishment for sin by dying on the cross. God put all of His anger on Jesus. Jesus didn’t deserve that! Why did He take the punishment for something He didn’t do? He did it so that you and I don’t have to. You mean we don’t have to pay for our own sins? Now that’s GOOD NEWS!
Sometimes I mess up small. But sometimes I mess up really big. The problem is, none of us can be good enough for God’s perfect heaven. The Bible says that the tiniest bad thing – even just a bad thought! – is enough to make everyone in the whole world guilty. That’s you. That’s me! Guilty people have to be punished. The punishment for sin (our badness) is being separated from God forever when we die. In hell we would be far away from His love. That’s bad news! But God didn’t let the story end there. He wanted to make a way to get rid of that horrible punishment so people could be with Him in heaven forever. But how?

Jesus didn’t stay dead. After three days He rose again to show everyone He has the power to give eternal life. If we trust in Him, God has no more punishment for us. Instead He offers us eternal life in heaven. When Jesus takes the sin out of our hearts He puts something else in it’s place: His perfect life. God sees Jesus’ goodness in us instead of our badness. Jesus’ good days cover all of our yucky days.
He takes our bad out and puts His good in. Do you still mess up sometimes? Me too. But now we can have something we didn’t have before: forgiveness! Pray and ask God to forgive your sins because of what Jesus did. Instead of being guilty you’ll be forgiven. Now that’s not just good news – that’s the BEST news! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Accept Christ today by admitting you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again. Choose Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You are now a new Christian!!
